Welcome to Medical Microbiology  at UCSD. This is a companion website to Bimm 124 taught in the Division of Biology at the University of California, San Diego.

    Although the main focus of this course is on bacteria and bacterial diseases, there is brief coverage of fungi and protozoa as well. The course objectives are to:                                                                              

Provide a basic understanding of the causes and sources of infectious disease. 
Highlight the structural and physiological properties of bacteria, fungi and protozoa, particulary as related to their ability to cause disease.
Discuss the basic mechanisms of disease and host defenses. 
Provide a detailed discussion of selected diseases caused by bacteria, fungi and protozoa.    
Relate the study of Medical Microbiology to life experiences. Discuss the role of Bacteria as agents of disease.
