Although the main focus of this course is on bacteria and bacterial diseases, there is brief coverage of fungi and protozoa as well. The course objectives are to:
 | Provide a basic understanding of the causes and sources of infectious disease. |
| Highlight the structural and physiological properties of bacteria, fungi and protozoa, particulary as related to their ability to cause disease. |
| Discuss the basic mechanisms of disease and host defenses. |
| Provide a detailed discussion of selected diseases caused by bacteria, fungi and protozoa. |
| Relate the study of Medical Microbiology to life experiences. Discuss the role of Bacteria as agents of disease. |
